Understanding Trigonometric Functions

The six trigonometric functions โ€” sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent โ€” relate angles to ratios of sides in a right triangle. On the unit circle (radius 1, centred at the origin), for any angle ฮธ the coordinates of the terminal point are (cos ฮธ, sin ฮธ). These functions are foundational in physics, engineering, signal processing, and navigation.

Primary Functions

The mnemonic โ€œAll Students Take Calculusโ€ tells which trig functions are positive in each quadrant: Q1 All ยท Q2 Sine ยท Q3 Tangent ยท Q4 Cosine.
