    BEUC's is speaking at the 2021 Consumer Law Conference in Germany. Our message is simple: the EU's Act doesn't do enough to protect consumers. Most AI systems would be left unregulated. That is too big a risk for consumers.

    👉The price of a phone call or SMS should be the same if it is domestic, or if it crosses a border to another EU country. Intra-EU communication surcharges have no place in the single market.

    👉The EU should set up agreements with non-EU countries to bring roaming costs down. Consumers pay exorbitant prices today.

    👉Roaming customers should pay the same price as locals do for freephone or premium rate numbers (e.g. an airline customer number), or the same price as what they pay when they’re at home and call a freephone/premium rate number in their home country.

    👉Consumers also need to be better protected when inadvertently roaming and when travelling on boats and planes which can rack up enormous bills.

    👉Remove the expiry date for the roaming rules. There’s no need for it. 👉Consumers should enjoy the same quality of service as at home and contracts need to be clear about it.

    Today the committee of the EU Parliament is voting on extending the rules which abolished charges. The regulation from 2017 was a big victory for consumers. Extending the rules beyond 2022 is a no-brainer, but some shortcomings must be addressed. THREAD.

    EU consumer law protects consumers against aggressive practices, including undue influence e.g. with intrusive and persistent notifications. WhatsApp (& many others!) engage in these practices to make consumers 'take' decisions that are in the benefit of the platform in question.
