  • Kathy Brown, President & CEO, provided the following statement to the ICANN Board of Trustees on Thursday, March 10, 2016 during the Public Forum session at ICANN 55 in Marrakech. Read more about ISOC's view on our IANA Stewardship Transition page. The Internet Society believes that the IANA Stewardship Transition package has the broad community backing it deserves. We strongly support it. Importantly, we believe it does two things: It ensures the continued stability of key technical functions that are a core part of the smooth operation of the Internet, and It provides the path forward...

  • The other day, I planned to take my 15-year-old son to the movie theatre to see “Hateful Eight” in 70mm film format. The theatre would not allow him in. Under article 240a of the Dutch penal code, it is a felony to show a movie to a minor when that movie is rated 16 or above. Even though I think I am responsible for what my son gets to see, I understand that the rating agency put a 16-year stamp on this politically-incorrect-gun-slinging-gore-and-curse-intense-comedy feature. All this is to say that in the (liberal and democratic) Dutch society, blocking and filtering communication is a fact...

  • 30 years ago, on the 16th and the 17th of January 1986, a meeting of the so-called DoD Gateway Algorithms Task Force took place in San Diego, California. During that meeting a charter for an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) was proposed. It defined the following mission: “The mission of this task force is to identify and resolve engineering issues in the near-term planning and operation of the DoD Internet. The goal of the effort is to improve and expand the service for operational users, including the gateway system and various networks operated (on behalf of all users such as Arpanet...

  • This year marks a milestone in the evolution of the Internet and its governance. The growth of Internet access and its impact on society demonstrate the success and ongoing viability of a collaborative, people-centered, and inclusive information society. But the benefits of the online world in areas such as education, health and development have yet to reach us all. There are now 3 billion people connected to the Internet, but more than half of the world’s population are yet to have access. With the ten year review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) to be concluded in...

  • In this post I'll shine a light on some of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) efforts underway to explore and address more sophisticated ways to use available bandwidth, improve Internet performance, and otherwise efficiently get Internet content to where it needs to be. These groups will all be meeting as part of the IETF 93 meeting in Prague next week. On the Sunday of IETF meetings, the Education team organises various tutorial sessions, and IETF 93 will include an ‘Introduction to Performance Measurements and Monitoring’ that will provide...

  • Thanks to the growth of the mobile Internet, there are now three percentages that are relevant to the digital divide globally: 94, 48, and 28. All three are amazing. Mobile telephony grew faster than almost anyone would have predicted 15 years ago, to the point where at least 94% of the world’s population receives a signal. The great news is that, as fast as mobile telephony took off and leap-frogged fixed telephony in the developing world, the mobile Internet has taken off even faster. Internet access can be added to a mobile network with far less investment than building the original...

  • June is another busy month for the Internet Society in the area of Internet security. People are what ultimately hold the Internet together. The Internet’s development has been based on voluntary cooperation and collaboration. Cooperation and collaboration remain the essential factors for its prosperity and potential. This is the spirit of the various events that the Internet Society team is participating in this month. On 4 June, I was honoured to participate in the European Agency on Network and Information Security (ENISA) Permanent Stakeholders’ Group (PSG) meeting in Athens. The PSG...
