Machine-learning algorithms created by researchers at the University of Washington can capture a 'persona' like Tom Hanks to create a digital models him and other well-photographed people.

With large visual data to mine, these algorithms can create a digital model of Hanks delivering speeches never performed and life-like mannerisms.

The new technology relies on achievements in 3D reconstruction, tracking, alignment and multi-textured modeling that have been developed by Ira Kemelmacher-Shilzerman and his team over the past 5 years.

A new paper on the findings will be presented at the International Conference on Computer Vision in Chile on Dec. 16.

#SINEWS DECEMBER ISSUE: Ever wonder how much math and work are behind the simulations for treating cardiovascular diseases?

Simulations for cardiovascular blood flow can now offer quantitative, predictive tools to surgical and treatment planning for many cardiovascular diseases like congenital heart disease and cerebral and abdominal aneurysms in children and adults.

Read about all its complexities in the newest issue of SIAM News!

Cardiovascular blood flow simulations offer non-invasive means to quantify hemodynamics in the heart and major blood vessels for patients with cardiovascular disease, and can aid in clinical decision-making. For the first time, they now bring quantitative, predictive tools to surgical and treatment planning.

Female African-American mathematicians have been at the forefront of modern achievements but are seldom or less recognized than their male counterparts in the history books.

Margot Lee Shetterly's new book "Hidden Figures: The African American Women Mathematicians Who Helped NASA and the United States Win the Space Race" tells the story of mathematicians like Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson who helped NASA calculate and co-author research for trajectory and sending astronauts into orbit.

Back when "computers" referred to people, African American women were some of NASA's most crucial mathematicians.

Worried about weak math education in the U.S., Jo Boaler of Stanford University is on a path to revolutionize how we teach students and treat their math abilities.

Citing a new neuroscience study that suggests the brain grows increases learning-and therefore math development- Boaler uses visual problems with multiple ways to be solved to provoke discussion and have kids think quantitatively about the world and its mathematical applications.

"It is very difficult to have a growth mindset and to believe that you can grow or learn if you are constantly given short, closed questions with a right or wrong answer," Boaler says.

What do you think of Baoler's methods?

You can check out Boaler's free online courses and curriculums to help bring unique tools to math learning!

Negative experiences such as timed tests, tracking and personal attitudes have hurt how some people feel about math. Stanford professor Jo Boaler wants to change all of that.
