You can’t read any technology publications, go to any tech events, or read a business journal these days without hearing a common theme; SaaS and the Cloud are The Future. For those in the know, the idea of having the infinite scalability of cloud resources, of not having to patch or maintain software, and knowing that they can get started more quickly or spin down resources at will is incredibly alluring. The promise is clear: it’s about Freedom.

We get this. Freedom has always been at the heart of Acquia and Drupal. The early days of open source were about the promise of “Free as in Beer”, but it stuck around and dominates the technology landscape because it’s also “Free as in Freedom”. Open source is not just free to download and use, but it’s also free to modify, to extend, and to share. We believe that Open Source, SaaS, and the Cloud are a perfect trinity -- releasing us all from the old slavery of giant license fees, of tremendous investments in data centers and “bare metal”, and the mind-numbing task of maintaining hundreds of applications when your priorities should be elsewhere.

Most Web Content Management systems have traditionally been sold to and bought by IT. However, innovation that has come out of the consumer technology space over the last decade has accelerated what experts are calling the "Consumerization of IT". Drupal is now in the center of this trend, which has shifted the buying center for Enterprise web technologies from IT to Digital Marketing organizations.

It's the Drupal t-skirt! You have a pile of Drupal t-shirts, you can knit some Drupal socks (by Emma Jane Hogbin), and now you can complete your outfit with a skirt.

In a recent blog post, I introduced some of Acquia's training partners, as a follow up, I wanted to introduce the trainers. One of the things I do in my job is meet all of the new trainers who join up through our Training Partner program. I interview them initially, and then give them an orientation to the course materials and what to expect in the classroom. As they teach and we get feedback from participants, I improve the materials with the trainer's feedback, and they improve on their in-class delivery. More...

Building a New News Organization for the World

I like to feature innovative people, concepts and companies that are using Drupal. I’m particularly fascinated by industries in a significant state of flux that are being changed and challenged by unique models and individuals. The news industry, and media in general, is an example of one of these broad vertical sectors. There are smart disruptors wisely coupling technology and capital to create the next generation of news and information leaders. One example of such an organization is the Global Post, which is based on the Boston waterfront. More...

Those of us getting really excited that it is almost time for DrupalCon again sometimes need to explain to our friends, colleagues, or family members what all the fuss is about. Explaining DrupalCon Have you ever had trouble putting it into words? "Yeah, Mom, we sit in rooms together and write code! ... Yes, I do that all year ... Yes, I talk to these people online all the time ... But DrupalCon is incredible because it's so ... y'know, great! I met Dries! I committed a patch with Webchick!" More...

My name is Nick Veenhof and I've been a member of the Drupal community for quite some time now. (more than 5 years it seems!). I've been trying to focus on the Search front, more specifically on the Apache Solr Search Integration front. Since September 2011 I have been working on Acquia Search, the Apache Solr Module and all of its derivatives. More...
