Twitter for Newsrooms: #Security

Some best practices have nothing to do with your Tweets. The security of your Twitter account is crucial, especially when you have thousands of followers relying on you for trustworthy information. Please review this Security Checklist and bookmark the relevant Support pages:

Security Checklist

  • Use a strong, unique password and keep it safe.
    • Do not share your password with anyone. Anyone. No matter how strong your password is, if someone else knows it, it’s no longer secure.
    • Do not use the same password on multiple sites or for multiple accounts on the same site. One compromise can lead to many others.
    • Do not use the same password for your email and Twitter account.
  • Use a password management system that will generate and store strong passwords for you. One good option is @1password.
  • Associate your account with a corporate email address. For example: twitter@MyNewsOrg.com. This makes password reset requests more secure and reliable, and it empowers your own IT department to help you out in the case of a problem. It also ensures that you can regain control of your accounts if people leave your organization without passing on their credentials.
  • Be aware of the third-party applications linked to your account. Log in, visit the Applications tab in Account Settings, and take a look at the applications listed there. If you do not recognize one, revoke its access immediately.
  • Follow Twitter’s @safety account for real-time tips.
  • Finally, if your account has been compromised:

    • Change your password immediately with the password reset form.
    • If you can’t login, file a Support ticket. Choose "Hacked or phished account" as the subject of your request.
    • Follow the @safety account for account security tips and alerts. As long as you’re following this account, you’ll also be able to DM us through the Twitter website.
