I think the default Cask search still requires having a copy of Tap rather than JSON API.

You could try description search (--desc) which supports JSON API, but this won't find tokens. It does find Cask names, e.g.

$ brew search --desc 'hack nerd font'
==> Formulae

==> Casks
font-hack-nerd-font: (Hack Nerd Font (Hack)) [no description]
$ brew search --desc '/Fira.*/'
==> Formulae

==> Casks
font-fira-code: (Fira Code) [no description]
font-fira-code-nerd-font: (FiraCode Nerd Font (Fira Code)) [no description]
font-fira-mono: (Fira Mono) [no description]
font-fira-mono-for-powerline: (Fira Mono for Powerline) [no description]
font-fira-mono-nerd-font: (FiraMono Nerd Font (Fira)) [no descr…
