Description of issue

I'd like to minimize the size of a brew installation on Linux. I notice the size of a fresh brew installation is about 185 MB, but of that, less than 70 MB is taken up by the actual files; the remainder is due to the entire git history of the Homebrew/brew repository being included in the installation. Is there any way around including this git history in the installation?

Beyond trying git gc --aggressive there's not much else that can be done. We fundamentally rely on git.

Oh well, good to know. Thanks for the answer. (For context, I'm trying to figure out how to package a brew installation as an RPM so it can more easily be preinstalled on a Fedora-based distro, and the size of the RPM has an impact on image size.)

We have a macOS .pkg installer, but nothing for Linux beyond the install script currently. Let us know if you figure it out!

Been over a decade since I last built RPMs, but I'm pretty sure you can start with the tarball mentioned in the untar anywhere instructions. That has no Git repo, but brew update should automatically create it afterwards, so there will be a delay and more disk space consumed there.

Note that brew itself will stop you from running as root, so you'll probably have to create a dedicated user for the install, and instruct your RPM's users to sudo -u <homebrew_user> brew ....
