You may encounter challenging situations and have limited experience or training to feel comfortable enforcing the CoC. These guidelines are meant to help guide you through the process of supporting other community members and yourself during an incident.\nAll EVERSE network members should feel empowered to enforce the Code of Conduct.\nIdeally, we would all be able to defuse an incident. In practice, we have varying comfort with situations depending on our current experience and the environment. Below are ways that you can be supportive and steps that you can take during or after an incident.\nIf you can, move from being a bystander to being a Code of Conduct first responder. If you see something inappropriate happening, speak up. If you don’t feel comfortable intervening, but feel someone should, please submit a report. For in-person events, please immediately contact a workshop host or instructor so that they can assist you in implementing the Immediate Response Checklist as listed below, and help submit a report to the CoCc.\nImmediate Response # The initial response to an incident is very important and will set the tone for EVERSE community. Depending on the severity and/or details of the incident, an immediate response may be required. If an incident involves physical danger or involves a threat to anyone’s safety (e.g. threats of violence), any member of the community may – and should – act immediately to protect safety. This can include contacting emergency or crisis resources.\nOngoing Incident # If an incident is ongoing, whether in-person or online, any community member (workshop host, instructor, helper) may act immediately and employ any of the tools available to the community member to pacify the situation. In situations where an individual community member acts immediately, they must inform the workshop host as soon as possible and report their actions to the CoCc for review within 24 hours of the incident. Should there be a need for an immediate response, please see the Immediate Response Checklist.\nChecklists for Responding to an Incident # Immediate Response Checklist # Assess whether you need a first-responder (law enforcement, etc.) to immediately respond to the incident. If so, ask the reporter to stay with you and call the appropriate emergency response number. If there is any general threat to participants and/or the safety of anyone attending a EVERSE event, contact the emergency response number established. If individuals are physically safe, contact law enforcement or security only at the reporter’s request. Follow any local guidelines for handling incidents, including if you have a legal reporting role. In-Person and Online Event Checklist # Ensure participants are safe. If participants are not safe, refer to the Immediate Response Checklist. Ask the reporter to report the incident via the Code of Conduct contact. If they would like your help or feel more comfortable if you complete the report, talk to them or communicate via email/online call to get their inputs in getting as much detail as possible, and help submit the report with their assistance. Inform the workshop host or the listed contact person (such as a CoC facilitator) that there was an incident and that a report was submitted via the incident report form. If the incident involves the workshop host or instructor, report the incident directly to the CoCc via the incident report form. Online Communications Channels Checklist # Inform the event host/meeting facilitator that there was an issue and send a report. Save screenshot of any online interaction where the issue occured and share in your report. If the incident involves the event host/meeting facilitator, please complete the incident report form and rest assured that confidentiality and your experience in our community is our first priority. If a community member has violated the CoC via an online event, the CoCc can enact a short-term Termed Suspension, and the reportee’s privileges to all EVERSE communication channels could be suspended until the CoCc has concluded their investigation of the reported incident.\nIndividuals reported often get upset, defensive, or deny the report. Allow them to give any additional details about the incident. However, remember:\nIt does not matter if they did not intend to hurt anyone; their behaviour still impacted participants negatively. It is not your job to reassure or forgive them. Do not allow the reported person to make an apology to the reporter or impacted person. Often an apology centers the reported person’s feelings and not the person who was impacted. You may accept their apology and offer to pass it on, but you’re not required to if you think it would negatively impact the reporter. And how can trainers and researchers discover training and educational materials through EVERSE’s training catalogue?\nThese were some of the questions raised this week at the 28th Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP) 2026, held at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand from 25-29 May 2026.\nCHEP is a long-standing conference addressing the computing, networking and software challenges of large-scale, data-intensive scientific experiences, bringing together computing experts in particle and nuclear physics from around the world. This year, EVERSE was represented by several members of the project, who had the opportunity to showcase the role and contributions of EVERSE within the High-Energy Physics community\nStefan Roiser (EVERSE WP5 lead, CERN) gave an overview of what EVERSE is doing to improve research software quality, highlighting EVERSE tools and services such as the RSQKit, DashVERSE and the TechRadar — showing how researchers can assess and improve their software quality and get proper recognition for it. He explained the current usage of EVERSE within the High Energy Physics community, such as the interaction with the HEP Software Foundation and the data lifecycle panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA).\nKenneth Rioja (EVERSE Developer of Training Infrastructure, CERN) presented EVERSE Training: a training catalogue for early career scientists and engineers to explore the best practices in research software engineering and find tutorials, workshops, schools, and other educational resources all in one place. It advocates for EOSC as a distinct Work Programme-based European Partnership under the European Union’s 10th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). Titled, EOSC as an indispensable component of the FP10 European Partnership portfolio, the paper lays out a strong case for EOSC as the unique horizontal enabler across the future portfolio of partnerships in FP10. EOSC, it argues, is “a strategic priority for the Union to build a resilient, productive, trusted, secure and sovereign knowledge economy”.\nAt the core of the Steering Board’s recommendations is a call to “continue EOSC under a Tripartite Governance involving the European Commission, Member States and Associated Countries, and the EOSC Association”. It advocates specifically in favour of including EOSC-A as tripartite representative of the EOSC user communities. While EVERSE’s work primarily spans Europe, improving software practices and sharing knowledge extend across continents.\nOrganised in partnership with the University of Cape Town’s eResearch Centre and the Science for Africa Foundation, the main goal of this EVERSE-Africa engagement event was to establish connections and collaborations across continents. Over 40 research software engineers from Europe, Africa and around the world – representing 18 countries – came together online to explore the challenges, best practices and opportunities in improving research code.\nThe event kicked off with an introduction to research software quality by Peter van Heusden (University of the Western Cape), who presented the perspective of research software creators. His talk focused on who is making the research software, highlighting the fact that around 80% are male creators from the EU and US. With less than 1% of creators based in Africa, the data highlights a distinct equity gap in who develops and shapes research software.\nA series of short talks from the African community, moderated by Anelda Van der Walt (eResearch Centre, University of Cape Town), brought together a range of voices from across the continent showcasing the breadth of software developed on the continent, discussing the challenges faced in creating research software and exploring ways of improving its quality.\nStephen Potter (South Africa Astronomical Observatory National Research Foundation) gave insight into how research software quality can be embedded in AI-enabled astronomy and why software quality matters in an observatory – emphasising the importance of reliability, reproducibility, sustainability and human oversight in testing the quality of the software.\nBringing a slightly different perspective, Gabriella Razzano (OpenUp) shared lessons from open source civic technology, identifying some key challenges (such as resourcing and gaps in skills and data governance) as well as opportunities (such as open source software and local collaboration).\nBarbara Ojur (SKAO, SARAO) highlighted the importance of starting with asking “why” to guide code development, emphasising that the difference between good software and meaningful software is purpose.\nMoving on to explore usability as a key tool to unlock the potential of research software, Paul Korir (CEMA, University of Nairobi) asked the question: ‘what should we do?’ when developing research software, offering suggestions such as placing usability as a key deliverable and investing in design skills.\nFollowing this series of interesting and insightful talks, EVERSE members presented a comprehensive overview of tools and services such as the RSQKit and ]TechRadar](https://everse.software/services/techradar/). It has been designed to be a one-stop shop for trainees to discover content and for trainers to showcase their training.\nWith Kenneth’s work as the maintainer and developer of EVERSE Training, Hugo’s focus on designing and building advanced AI systems for training and research software quality, and David’s extensive experience on training in research institutions, together they worked on developing a new feature for the catalogue.\nFilling out a lengthy form is what most, if not all, would consider to not be a particularly fun task — and this was the challenge with the training catalogue. Each time a user wants to register a material or an event in EVERSE Training, the form takes a lot of time to go through, asking for a lot of information, such as: a description, learning objectives, trainee prerequisites, key words, and the list goes on — you get the picture. But what actually ends up happening? Less information written on the form, resulting in fewer details about the training resource to assess its usefulness.\nAfter exchanging emails, pondering how exactly such changes to the user experience could be implemented, Kenneth and Hugo decided to meet in person in Paris at the IJC Lab in early May.\nOver three days, Kenneth and Hugo got to work with designing the imagined pipeline on a whiteboard. “For two days, we worked hard to find a solution to improve the Catalogue’s user experience. It felt like a hackathon, with the objective clear in our minds,” explained Kenneth.\nAnd their objective? To set up a Python module that could easily be plugged into the TeSS infrastructure.\nHere is the pipeline they came up with:\nReceive information from the form/UI the URL to analyse Get the content of this page using Crawl4AI Filter out associated links to reduce context length (avoiding long compute times) and, more critically, to eliminate \u0026ldquo;noisy\u0026rdquo; keywords from URLs — for example, abundant GitHub links could mislead the AI agent into treating \u0026ldquo;github\u0026rdquo; as a relevant keyword. Do a search and match from a predefined list of keywords for the keywords Feed the content to an LLM-based AI agent to assess the relevance of extracted keywords with respect to the page content. This was a question explored by EVERSE members in the quest to improve the user experience of EVERSE Training…","title":"Enhancing the user experience of EVERSE’s Training Catalogue","type":"news"},{"content":"On 22nd April, ELIXIR STEERS and EVERSE came together in Amsterdam to organise a hackathon focused on drafting research software stories.\nELIXIR-STEERS aims to help life science researchers access national data sets and conduct large-scale, cross-border data analysis across Europe, and EVERSE aims to create a framework for research software excellence, championed by the research communities, with ELIXIR as a contributing partner.\nAround 10 participants took part in the hackathon mainly representatives of ELIXIR Community software usecases, to find out what exactly a Research Software Story is, why they are so important, as well as learn hands-on how to craft their own stories that can be used to better support research software practices across scientific communities.\nWhat do we mean by Research Software Stories?\nA Research Software Story is a structured narrative used to explain the role the software plays in research and helps others understand not just what the software does, but why it exists and how it fits within the wider research ecosystem. The hackathon introduced participants to the RSQKit’s Research Software Stories, highlighting how they work as a practical way of capturing and communicating about not only how research software is developed, but also how it is used and sustained.\nParticipants were guided through how to craft their own stories about the software they are developing, identifying the ‘why’ behind writing them and trying their hand at drafting their own stories. It also provided a valuable opportunity for everyone at EVERSE to get together, for the most part in person, and share their updates, exchange ideas and look ahead to what’s still to come as the project now enters its final year.\nA range of workshops and parallel sessions took place during the General Assembly, with the first day kick-started by each Work Package leader providing their latest updates and progress, while also laying out the foundations for what is ahead.\nTo ensure that everyone’s up to speed, here are a few key pointers and updates from each Work Package:\nWP1:Framework of the European Network of Research Software Quality\nCollaboration between WPs is essential to strengthen dissemination efforts, as well as ensuring centralised reporting.\nBridging the gap in industry engagement through driving outreach with strategic industry partners.\nWP2: Community-led best practices for developing high-quality research software\nThe RSQKit continues to be developed through landscaping efforts, gathering best practices across multiple research clusters – with the goal of integrating the kit into the broader quality pipeline.\nWP2 is piloting an AI-assisted tool for content creation within the RSQKit, whilst ensuring that the RSQKit remains a standard for best practice for both technical reviewers and policy levers.\nWP3: Tools and services for software quality and FAIRness\nThe successful transition from conceptual prototypes to functional services, integrating these components into a “software quality loop”, designed to ensure a cohesive end-to-end experience for researchers and developers. WP4: EOSC Science Cluster Pilots and Driver projects\nDeveloping flexible pathways that tailor quality indicators to each science community’s needs and resource levels, while also exploring synergies with the OSCARS project to align open science initiatives with EVERSE standards. WP5: Capacity building and recognition\nThe curation and expansion of training resources, linking such resources directly to the RSQKit.\nFuture efforts will focus on increasing the volume of available resources while ensuring they are integrated more broadly across EVERSE’s toolset.\nOngoing development of the Credit and Recognition Framework, connecting EVERSE with existing recognition services.\nWP5 is looking to create a multifaceted credit system for maintenance, documentation and community support, whilst exploring how to embed recognition and training elements into everyday coding.\nWP6: Project management and coordination\nFocusing on long-term sustainability of EVERSE tools and resources, working to establish stronger connections between EVERSE tools and their practical application.\nOngoing work towards how to integrate EVERSE within the wider EOSC ecosystem.\nAfter these much-needed updates and with everyone on the same page, a series of demonstrations of EVERSE services, such as the RSQKit and DashVERSE, followed:\nThe RSQKit demo highlighted its focus as a task-based knowledge hub that aims to connect high-level quality indicators with the practical tools used by the community. More than 30 people attended the event in person, with 17 actively participating remotely, demonstrating the effectiveness of a fully hybrid event.\nDuring the first day of the meeting, Ignacio Blanquer (Universitat Politècnica de València, EOSC-A Director) set the stage by providing an overview of the EOSC Association with an emphasis on the challenges and expectations around research software. Building on this introduction, Fotis Psomopoulos (INAB|CERTH, EVERSE coordinator) presented the goal, ambition and overall vision of the project, emphasizing the three key challenges;\ndefining a common framework and understanding of research software quality together with the science communities, marshalling an arsenal of tools and services to be used across communities in order to facilitate research software quality, and establish a framework to recognize and reward all activities around research software (implementation, maintenance, curation and sustainability). The second day had a strong start, kicking off the activities with a “fireside chat” between Carole Goble (University of Manchester) and Joris van Eijnatten (Netherlands eScience Center), challenging the participants to reflect upon four statements:\n“All communities exist beyond EOSC (and beyond Europe!)”, “Good enough is excellent”, “Ease of use is crucial” and “Research Performing Organizations \u0026amp; funders have responsibilities”. The lively debate on these topics allowed participants to move towards more in-depth and detailed discussion on the practical aspects of the project. Starting from an overview of the pilots, each one selected and driven by one of the science communities, the participants tackled the key elements of the project; from the community-led “good enough” practices and the respective tools and services for research software quality and FAIRness, to the open questions around capacity building and recognition of software-related activities, as well as the framework to establish a European Network of research software quality. Closely connecting to the latter point, an invited talk by Caxton Murira (Science for Africa Foundation) gave the Pan-African research software community of practice (RESCOPE), allowing us to define the first steps towards expanding the EVERSE network beyond Europe. The second day concluded with a number of break-out discussions, aiming to: define the next short-term activities towards: creating the cross-community catalogue of Infrastructure, tools, services and best practices on software quality/curation/assessment; designing a first version of the Research Software Quality toolkit (RSQkit), an open knowledge base to gather and curate expertise that will contribute to high-quality software and code across different disciplines; and defining the requirements towards evaluation, metrics and indicators.\nThe third day of the event was fully dedicated to a joint discussion between EVERSE and OSCARS, demonstrating the close relationship of these two projects. With an overall attendance of 80 members from both projects, the day started with a short overview of both projects delivered by Fotis Psomopoulos (INAB|CERTH, EVERSE coordinator) and Giovanni Lamanna (CNRS LAPP, OSCARS coordinator). The entire day was then dedicated to cross-project breakout sessions, fleshing out the existing complementarities and mapping out practical joint activities. The Science Clusters in Horizon Europe, represented by OSCARS, aim to acknowledge software achievements, raise awareness of the foundation approach, and promote career development. EVERSE aims to leverage the expertise on research software quality across domains, building a federated competence center on software excellence.
