The Trump Administration’s Increased Use of Social Media Surveillance

This chilling paragraph is in a comprehensive Brookings report about the use of tech to deport people from the US:

The administration has also adapted its methods of social media surveillance. Though agencies like the State Department have gathered millions of handles and monitored political discussions online, the Trump administration has been more explicit in who it’s targeting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new, zero-tolerance “Catch and Revoke” strategy, which uses AI to monitor the public speech of foreign nationals and revoke visas of those who “abuse [the country’s] hospitality.” In a March press conference, Rubio remarked that at least 300 visas, primarily student and visitor visas, had been revoked on the grounds that visitors are engaging in activity contrary to national interest. A State Department cable also announced a new requirement for student visa applicants to set their social media accounts to public—reflecting stricter vetting practices aimed at identifying individuals who “bear hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles,” among other criteria.

It seems to me the issue here is that the people being deported are anti-Trump, rather than being anti-USA.

I am certain Greta would argue her position is anti-Netanyahu and not antisemitic.

There’s so, so much to visit in the Brookings report. I’ve gotten slightly distracted …

ICE’s acquisition request for ImmigrationOS delineates three service needs, the first being the prioritization of transnational criminal organizations*, violent criminals, and visa overstays.

Palantir is to provide the prototype by Sept 25, 2025 with a contract through Sept 2027.

  • ” … cartels and other transnational organization, such as TdA and MS-13.”

… about the data lake …

@ Bruce,

I don’t want to get into the politics or personalities of this as it’s really not relevant.

However what is relevant is the UK Police quite deliberately waiting for someone to cross into international space then detain them because they could then use “extraordinary powers” they did not otherwise have.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0rpwkp9xz2o

It’s the reason I advise people not to cross into “air space” / “territorial waters” with any electronic devices.

And if they must, take electronic devices to first encrypt them with a “random key” that they have “posted ahead” and in no way attempted to memorise.

That way they can truthfully say they do not know what the key is and never did. Which under the legislation is about the only defence available to a person.

Yes there are ways to make it more secure such that you never see the key in any form and I’ve mentioned them before.

But the point is, in the UK the Police and other authorities are quite deliberately plotting how to go on what would otherwise be “unlawful fishing trips” and in other ways abuse the system put in place by the UK Parliament to protect UK Citizens. So they are quite deliberately thumbing their nose at the UK legal system, knowing they will almost certainly get away with it…

I just wish a judge would find an excuse to lock one or two of them up for a while, so the message that the protective legislation is there for a good and sufficient reason, and they should not abuse / break them just because they wear a uniform.

So I fail to see the problem. These posters presumeably submitted their post to social media so that it WOULD BE READ. So it is BEING READ. We’re they expecting the posts to be kept secret? State Dept is researching foreign nationals and judging who gets visas… which is a defacto part of their mission. Sounds like everything is working the way it says on the label. Only trouble is that folks apparently have not read the label.

For decades, Americans were afraid that the capabilities of CIA and NSA were turned against them, and more recently, Edward Snowden warned against a turnkey tiranny using NSA systems. But now it seems that the Trump government doesn’t need all that: ICE does all the dirty work and when they need information they simply buy huge datasets and surveillance tools from commercial vendors. Even blackmailing in J. Edgar Hoover style seems way too cumbersome nowadays.

When anybody admitted to US on any type of visa, they accepted the principle of being law abiding resident. Any visa is privilege not right. Privilege could be revoke by sufficient federal authority issued this visa any time by their discretion. No court authority as I see it should be involved.
On the other hand to be fair, the behavior which is not accepted by visa holder should clear specified before visa was granted.
There is no such right to be admitted in any capacity to US (except UN staff) but privilege only granted by US government based on criteria it found relevant.
Please, keep this post not be in eco chamber. Thanks.

@ Bruce, ALL,

This is “hot off the press and should be read.

Even though to some of us it’s not unexpected.

https://www.lighthousereports.com/investigation/surveillance-secrets/

It might or should make you concider changing your habits,

Underneth it is the issue of “Signalling System 7″(SS7) that I’ve mentioned before, and knew all about back in the very early days of Cellular phones (and it’s still there today).

Remember the old Joseph Heller saying,

“Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.”

And in this day and age they are after everyone “just in case” with “Collect it All” they have as I’ve mentioned before the equivalent of a “virtual time machine”. A point few really get the significance of untill they take the time to think about it. Then they often “Change their Habits”.

For those that doubt, just remember at one point in my life I earned a living because of it, and I still could today because as was once observed,

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

@Jonathan Smith, @not important

You want to deny visas and/or revoke them because you don’t like what people think and say?
Fair enough, it is your country, but don’t get surprised if less people wants to travel there.
For bonus points, the rest of the countries should do the same to US citizens so they can taste a little of their own medicine.
You voted for Trump and are in the MAGA cult? say bye bye to vacations in Europe.

Clive Robinson October 15, 2025 6:41 AM

@ not important, ALL,

You say,

“When anybody admitted to US on any type of visa, they accepted the principle of being law abiding resident.”

That fails for two reasons,

1, It’s not possible to know all the laws and regulations.
2, Most citizens break some of those rules just about every day or week.

Because this is the way the Politicians and legislators want things to be.

So in practice,

“There are no law abiding residents/citizens in any country, only those who have not yet been prosecuted.”

If you doubt this read Harvey A. Silverglate’s,

“Three Felonies a Day : How the Feds target the innocent.”

https://fee.org/articles/three-felonies-a-day-how-the-feds-target-the-innocent/

As a Civil libertarian attorney, he’s seen first hand the tricks the Federal prosecutor’s use to obtain convictions, or make bankrupt those that they chose to attack, and who fight back by going to court. With their behaviour all carried out on “The Public Dime” and with no fear of sanction even when they themselves break the law as they “knowingly do” multiple times a day.

From the Federal point of view “every trial is a show trial” and “the chosen victim must be slaughtered for the beast to feast”.

It makes the Roman “feeding to the lions” look positively humane in comparison.

The administration has also adapted its methods of social media surveillance.

Who did expect anything else from a man who admires the Poisoner of Moscow and the Supreme Leader of North Korea?

It was also described in detail in Project 2025. Which was entirely written by billionaire funded underlings as the Mad Red Hatter himself is unable to formulate a consistent policy of more than two sentences before he diverts to talking about how wonderful he is.

not important October 15, 2025 5:06 PM

@Clive, @nobody – thank you for your opinion.

@Clive said ‘Most citizens break some of those rules just about every day or week.’

The difference is citizens are in their own country, and in US when you don’t like laws nobody will forcefully keep you inside – you free to go (except in possession of some government secrets and signed particular papers when got the job).

I love that book you recommended and read it many years ago. I agree that ambiguous laws create the environment of selective application of laws.

Anyway, for @all: guest when coming to the country must accept unconditionally laws and modus of living of country they are enter to not impose their values and even laws (as in UK and EU somebody try- I see Denmark, Poland, Hungary as very good exception) on citizens of the country being entered. Just be aware – you do have human rights as human being. That right do not assume right to be admitted to any (illegally for sure) country and you can stay if and only if you not create any disturbance.

Exploiting vulnerabilities in SS7 signalling and other services is a totally legitimate for-profit exercise of outfits who exist solely to shape reality and manipulate public opinion. They serve the interests of the wealthy and powerful so they can meddle with elections, break into and extract information from human rights defenders, encourage unrest or fabricate information and plant it into social media streams or sell as media stories.

Politicians can hit the key words like “transparency” and “innocent civilians” of such media campaigns to ensure that the messaging is delivered succinctly into our mind wholes.

Without these companies distracting the public with fake news and claiming that real events are “fake news”, politicians and business executives would face far more scrutiny or public curiosity and investigation. Covid, immigration, terrorism – there are countless hashtags and inauthentic profiles operating in a coordinated manner to ensure eyes are transfixed.

Everyone has heard of Cambridge Analytica. Few know the names of the psyop operators.

Elinadav Heyman, Fabio Goldman, Yuval Harel, Uri Ben Yosef, Ariel Treiger, and Rafi Cesana run an outfir called Archimedes Group. Elinadav Heymann is the former director of the Brussels-based European Friends of Israel lobbying group, a former political adviser in Israel’s parliament and an ex-intelligence agent for the Israeli air force.

Looking to sow chaos and discord to overthrown democratic elections or create unrest in Africa, Southeast Asia, or Latin America?

The Archimedes Group runs information warfare operations similar to those of the Kremlin and its motive is purely for profit. It conducts its activities during elections and in times of conflict, in regions around the world including Sub-Saharan Africa.

Inauthentic accounts posed as members of local populations but were really run from places like the UK and Isreal. The Tel Aviv-based political consulting and lobbying firm publicly boasts of its social media skills and ability to “change reality”.
